Interim Recruitment: a Powerful Tool to Improve Talent Management

Hiring interim talent is a great way to support your business without the time-consuming process of recruiting and onboarding a new employee. Why? Because interim recruitment solutions provide employers with flexibility, allowing companies to hire contractors for as long as necessary for a specific project or role.

Hiring interim talent is a great way to support your business without the time-consuming process of recruiting and onboarding a new employee. Why? Because interim recruitment solutions provide employers with flexibility, allowing companies to hire contractors for as long as necessary for a specific project or role. Plus interims can hit the ground running without a settling in period.

Some of the most surprising ways that interims can benefit an organisation are related to driving talent management. According to a thought leadership report from PMI*, there are three key practices in this process: identifying and acquiring talent, development and retention, and capturing and transferring knowledge. Interim recruitment is a great way to achieve all three of these methods.

Interims can fill in an activity gap while a company searches for an individual with the exact skill set needed on a long-term basis, meaning that businesses can spend the time and energy required to identify and then eventually acquire the right person for the job.

As for development and retention, interims can contribute a breadth of skills to a project. This can be advantageous to other members of a team, who will learn from new insight through collaboration. They can also support permanent members of staff in a company by helping to spread a heavy workload, which benefits all by avoiding employee burnout.

Finally, looking at capturing and transferring knowledge, interims have diverse expertise that stems from their experience with a range of companies on different projects – this guarantees that they have encountered, and overcome, a wide array of challenges in different working environments. They will therefore be well-versed in best market practices and can apply these in their work.

The amount of experience that interims can bring to a business is reflected in the Institute of Interim Management’s 2018 survey*, which reports that interim managers are often veterans in their subject field, with the average age of 52.5 and 59% of respondents falling into the 50-59 age bracket. The pool of interim managers is also becoming more diversified, giving companies an increasingly varied choice of potential candidates, with 27% of respondents identifying as female, compared to only 15% in 2004.

The survey also reports that there is a close split between the types of roles that interim hires take on, including: CFO/CIO/COO/ director (28%), manager/ head of department (21%), project/ programme manager (26%) and consultant (30%), with the remainder (10%) reporting to be in CEO/MD/ general manager positions. There is therefore room for contractors across a number of functions in a business.

In other words, there’s a large talent pool of experienced interims who are ready to step into a range of roles within your company.
